We are very proud to announce that the Competence Centre for Precision Viticulture is finally launched!
What is the SmartVitiNet Competence Centre?
The SmartVitiNet Competence Centre for Precision Viticulture brings together experts, technology providers, and researchers for innovation in viticulture. The objective of the Competence Centre is to help viticulture become smarter and more sustainable with access to solutions that make a real difference. By connecting innovative solutions with challenges, the Competence Centre supports the development and pilot of precision viticulture tools in Greece, Portugal, Cyprus, and France.
The Five Modules
Through a series of practical modules, participants can gain new skills and insights into how technology can support their work in the vineyard. Here’s what’s included:

🍇Common Problems and Smart Technologies in Viticulture (by Agricultural University of Athens) An overview of current challenges in the field and how technology can help.

📷 Cameras, Lenses and Sensors (by Hellenic Drones S.A.) A closer look at the tools used for monitoring vineyards from the air.

🚁 Practical Guide to Using Drones in Viticulture (by Iscte – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa) Hands-on advice for integrating drones into vineyard operations.

💶 Funding Opportunities (by Future Needs) Tips and guidance on finding the right funding for your ideas!
Training Portal Coming Soon!
The SmartVitiNet Training Portal is an advanced, user-friendly digital platform designed to support informed decision-making in viticulture. Users can interact with the system through web/mobile interfaces, and contribute feedback for continuous model refinement. Built with a focus on ethics, and sustainability, the SmartVitiNet portal ensures secure, real-time access to actionable insights — driving innovation, productivity, and resilience in the European wine sector. Developed by WaltR, the SmartVitiNet Training Portal is soon to be launched.

In April, the project Dissemination Leader, Future Needs, participated in the Women in Business and Beyond Conference in Limassol, Cyprus. Anna Palaiologk led an engaging workshop that explored how to bring more women into traditionally male-dominated sectors, like agriculture and precision farming.

SmartVitiNet Research Accepted at World Congress of Vine and Wine

The SmartVitiNet research has been accepted to be presented at the World Congress of Vine and Wine! The paper, led by Maritina Stavrakaki from the Agricultural University of Athens and Theo Kontogiannis from AgroecologyLab, dives into the transformative role of drone technology in agriculture, particularly in precision viticulture. It explores how drones enhance crop monitoring, disease detection, irrigation planning, and yield estimation, offering real-time, high-precision data that empowers more sustainable and efficient vineyard management.

SmartVitiNet flew over the sky of Cyprus!
May 2025, SmartVitiNet did its first drone flight in Cyprus, the drone flew over the beautiful vineyards of Gerolemo winery in Omodos. The project team Georgina Siitta Achilleos from Future Needs and Vaggelis Vlachos from Dronint visited the winery to collect high-resolution aerial data. The drone was piloted by Vaggelis Vlachos from Dronint.

SmartVitiNet presented in the Green Wine International Scientific Congress 2025
On 19-20th May, Maria Da Graça Monteiro from Iscte represented the SmartVitiNet project at the GreenWine International Scientific Congress in Verona. Her poster presentation highlighted key results from the project and introduced the Competence Centre for Precision Viticulture.

Upcoming events
MacroWine Conference in Bolzano
Emma Tsai, Communication and Dissemination Leader from Future Needs is attending the MacroWine Conference presenting the project. The MacroWine Conference is going to be organised in Bolzano, Italy, from the 24th June to the 27th of June.
XIII Iberian Congress of AgroEngineering 2025
Maria Da Graça Monteiro will present the SmartVitiNet project at the XIII Iberian Congress of AgroEngineering, taking place from 21–23 July. Maria will introduce SVN’s technology- a holistic plant protection system using drones, advanced sensors, and observation platforms. And the Competence Centre for Precision Viticulture, which provides training, best practices, and networking to support innovation and sustainability in the wine sector.
SmartVitiNet Final Event in Cyprus
As mentioned at the beginning of this newsletter, SmartVitiNet is now at the final stage of the project implementation. We are excited to showcase our three-year-journey, the results, the lessons learned, with people who are interested in the agricultural/ viticultural sectors!

Greetings from the SmartVitiNet Project!
Time flies, SmartVitiNet is entering the last quarter of the project. These last few months are filled with activities, milestones, and events, hence we are excited for this edition of Newsletters!
Since the last edition, the project has been working on the info days, launching the Competence Centre, the Training Portal, and dissemination activities by attending conferences and submitting papers. Let’s get into it!

Join the 3-Day Info day of SmartVitiNet!
On the 24th, 25th & 26th of June, 11:00-12:00 CEST each day, the SmartVitiNet project is going to host a 3-day online webinar, presenting precision viticulture and funding opportunities for professionals working in technology and agricultural sectors.
Day one, 24th of June, hosted by Iscte - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa: Let's Elevate! Competence Centre for Precision Viticulture & Info Day
This session will present the SmartVitiNet Competence Centre, a free digital hub dedicated to precision viticulture. Participants will gain access to training, latest advancements on smart agriculture, related policies, best practices, and consultancy services for smart vineyard management!
Day two, 25th of June, hosted by WaltR: Satellite data for viticulture and other applications, opportunities and challenges
In this session, WaltR will show how earth observation can bring new insights and value across sectors. From agriculture to environmental monitoring and beyond.
Day three, 26th of June, hosted by Future Needs: How to get your mission project funded?
With a long track record of getting funded projects, Future Needs will present the funding opportunities for your innovative projects in smart agriculture. During the interactive session, you will be able to exchange ideas and build up a project with other key players from the technology and agricultural sectors!
