SmartVitiNet Takes to the Skies: First Cyprus Drone Flight Marks a Major Step for Innovation in Viticulture

The SmartVitiNet project continues its mission to transform viticulture, achieving a major milestone this month with its very first Cyprus drone flight in the scenic village of Omodos, among the rolling vineyards of the well-known Gerolemo winery. The operation was organised by Georgina Siitta from Future Needs and Vaggelis Vlachos from Dronint, who piloted the SmartVitiNet drone over the vineyards of the Limassol Krasochoria region. Their mission: to collect high-resolution aerial data that will feed into SmartVitiNet’s precision agriculture systems.

This flight is more than just a technological achievement, it represents the combination of tradition and innovation. By using drone-assisted aerial monitoring, SmartVitiNet provides viticulturists with actionable insights that can improve grape yield, enhance wine quality, and reduce environmental impact. Additionally, it marks a practical implementation of the project's goals: using smart technologies to address challenges such as pest control, water stress, and sustainable land management, all while keeping producers competitive in a fast-evolving market.

This successful drone flight is just the beginning. As SmartVitiNet continues to evolve, it will roll out more tools and knowledge-sharing opportunities through its recently launched Competence Centre, equipping wine professionals across Europe with the skills and data they need to thrive.

Stay tuned as we continue to fly high toward smarter, more sustainable wine production, one vineyard at a time!
