At the heart of the beautiful Ktima Gerolemo vineyard, our SmartVitiNet Demonstration Day in Cyprus brought together experts, winegrowers, academia, and tech enthusiasts to explore how drones and sensors are shaping the future of viticulture.
After successful demo events in France and Portugal, the SmartVitiNet Demo day showcased how precision technologies can make wine production more sustainable, efficient, and innovative.
Drones In Action! The Future of Vineyard Management Is Here!
Participants witnessed live drone flights conducted by Vaggelis Vlachos from Dronint across the vineyard, capturing real-time data and detecting crop stress indicators. Through these demonstrations, attendees saw firsthand how drones and smart sensors can support better decision-making, from monitoring crop health and identifying water stress to enabling precision spraying.
“What SmartVitiNet is doing is important because it helps the wine growers to make better decisions more easily and accurately and most importantly, on time.”
Michalakis Christoforou, Research Collaborator from Cyprus University of Technology, participant of Cyprus Demo Day
Empowering the Wine Sector with Knowledge and Collaboration
Our research partners Maria Monteiro from ISCTE introduced the SmartVitiNet Competence Centre while Adam Wier from WaltR introduced the Training Portal, two key tools designed to help wine professionals embrace the digital transition in viticulture. These platforms aim to make innovation more accessible and provide training resources for integrating technology into vineyard management.
Then, the funding workshop hosted by Thanos Arvanitidis from Future Needs, offered a dynamic, hands-on exploration of opportunities for agricultural innovation, introducing participants to the broader funding ecosystem and helping them connect with potential support channels.
To conclude the day, participants enjoyed a wine tasting and networking session, featuring seven premium wines. The atmosphere was filled with great conversations, laughter, and shared enthusiasm for the digital future of viticulture.
“We want our students to use technology and drones in agriculture to make work easier and more cost-effective. I discovered SmartVitiNet for the first time at this event and met experts I hope to collaborate with. It’s really good to have this event. I would like to have more [events] about technologies, about how you can bring technology into your daily life, and explain this to the young people. Because this is the future.”
Thomas Antoniou, Mechanical Engineer trainer at Ministry of Education and Culture, Cyprus - Technical Education Department, Participant of Cyprus Demo Day
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us and to all the partners who made this possible. Here’s to innovation that grows, one vine at a time. 🌿🍷
